Wrocław’s road to the Nobel prizes

It has begun! The engine has started … it’s no longer standing at the station … the wheels are spinning one after the other – it’s not yet gliding on the tracks, but it’s on the right tracks. TUTORING has just started to happen at the University of Wrocław. By the Rector’s Ordinance of 14 April 2023 defined the rules for the implementation of classes conducted in the form of tutoring on full-time studies at our University.

The beginning

The project called tutoring was initiated at the University of Wrocław several years ago. Since 2004, it has been the basic operating principle of the interdisciplinary first- and second-level studies run by the College for Interdisciplinary Individual Studies at the University of Wrocław. Since then, more than 120 tutors – professors and assistant professors of the University – have cooperated with the College. The specificity of the tutoring method at the MSI College is, according to Alumni: “a creative mix of trusting the student and spreading the necessary care”, “the possibility to study courses – tailored and composed according to individual needs”.

Tutoring develops best in conditions of dialogue and exchange of experiences. The space for such dialogue should be interdisciplinary, creating situations that are conducive to stepping outside one’s comfort zone. In 2023, on the initiative of the Head of the MSI College – prof. dr. hab. Piotr P. Chruszczewski – the TUTORING ACADEMY was established, the third edition of which will start on 11 May 2024.

Tutoring Academy programme in the opinion of students

The proposed programme of the TUTORING ACADEMY course includes:

– “interesting, professional and inspiring classes with the right balance between lecture and workshop parts”,

– “interesting tools and tips to apply in tutoring work”,

– “creative workshops allowing you to open up to non-standard forms and methods of tutoring”,

– “activities that help you step out of your own comfort zone”, “tailor-made for the tutor”,

– “classes that inspire and show new ways and interesting insights into the student and the problems they may face”,

– “interesting classes showing practical and business aspects of tutoring”,

– “classes that have the added value of bonding the group” […]*.

University Tutoring Congress

Four months ago, the first open University Tutoring Congress was organised at the University of Wroclaw, bringing together primary and secondary school teachers, UWr students and teaching staff and researchers from eight faculties of the University of Wroclaw.

Tutoring at the UWr faculties

Work on the introduction of tutoring as an additional teaching method at the University of Wrocław began several years ago in the University’s Committee for Quality of Education at the UWr. Concrete results did not come until 2023. On April 14, 2023, Ordinance No. 93/2023 of the Rector of the University of Wrocław on teaching activities conducted in the form of tutoring was published. Since then, work has accelerated and more UWr faculties are joining the project with concrete documents and actions:

How to train a Nobel laureate?

As prof. Kenneth J. Arrow suggested: prepare the right conditions for development (see Chruszczewski [2021] in Academic Journal of Modern Philology, vol. 14). All indications are that such conditions are formally being created at the University of Wrocław!
