The environmental perspective is a new direction in humanistic studies, born out of ecological sensitivity. By drawing attention to the role of the natural environment, climate or animals in historical processes, it introduces protagonists hitherto absent from mainstream research on the past, and by seeking to understand the interrelationships between humans and nature, it allows for a better understanding of contemporary challenges and threats. Environmental history, which has been emerging as a research discipline in Western countries since the 1970s, has recently become increasingly popular also in Poland.
