A meeting with prof. Andrzej Wypustek, “Homoseksualność i homoerotyzm w świecie starożytnym” (“Homosexuality and homoeroticism in the ancient world”), will be held on March 15, 2024 (Friday) at 2:00 pm in the reading room of the Historical Institute UWr (ul. Szewska 49).
Prof. Wypustek is an antiquary, and an employee of the Institute of History of the University of Warsaw, specialising in the religious and everyday life of ancient Greece and Rome. He has also worked on the subject of ancient sexuality for many years. He is the author of many books, including: „Imperium szamba, ścieku i wychodka. Przyczynek do historii życia codziennego w starożytności” (2018), „Rzymskie graffiti seksualne, erotyczne i miłosne z Pompejów i Herkulanum” (2019), and most recently co-author (with prof. P. Sawiński of the Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań) of the synthesis „Homoseksualność i homoerotyzm w świecie starożytnym” (2023).
The topic of the lecture will be the issues taken up in the professor’s latest book, i.e. homosexuality and homoeroticism in the cultures of the ancient Near East and in the world of the ancient Greeks and Romans, and the role they played in the customs of the time. The monograph by professors Wypustek and Sawiński is the first scholarly synthesis of this issue in the Polish language concerning ancient times.
