How to identify rocks and minerals – a popular science lecture

Organizers:

Institute of Geological Sciences

Date:

28 October 2023, 10:00 - 12:00

Place:

Institute of Geological Sciences, pl. M. Borna 9, room 220 (2nd floor)

We can usually recognise trees, bushes and animals that we encounter around us, near where we live or on trips. It is not so easy to recognise inanimate natural elements such as rocks and minerals. Although we know the names of a few basic rock varieties, such as granite or basalt, recognising rocks poses considerable problems for most people.

Meanwhile, the correct identification of a given rock carries far greater implications – it allows one to determine under what conditions it was formed, whether the area where it was found once had a sea, volcanoes were active, or perhaps it was deeply buried beneath the surface. During dr Dawid Białek’s lecture entitled „Jak rozpoznawać skały i minerały” (“How to recognise rocks and minerals”), we will learn how to identify basic rocks and minerals and how to (at least a little) decipher their history.

The lecture will take place on 28.10.2023 in room 220 (2nd floor) of the Institute of Geological Sciences and the Teams application.

Wykład odbędzie się 28.10.2023 w sali 220 (II p.) Instytutu Nauk Geologicznych oraz w aplikacji Teams.

The project “Integrated Program for the Development of the University of Wrocław 2018-2022” co-financed by the European Union from the European Social Fund
