The staff of the Institute of Geological Sciences at the University of Wrocław invite you to a lecture by Michał Kajewski entitled „Geolog na dachu – w poszukiwaniu miejskich mikrometeorytów” (“Geologist on the roof – in search of urban micrometeorites”). – We will tell you how we managed to be the first research team in Poland to find urban micrometeorites – emphasise the scientists.
“Meteorites are usually associated with the spectacular luminous and acoustic phenomena that take place during their passage through the atmosphere, but it is micrometeorites that, completely unnoticed, deliver thousands of tonnes of cosmic matter to the Earth’s surface every year. Despite their small size, rarely exceeding 0.5 mm in diameter, they can provide us with a wealth of information. We can learn from them, for example, what maximum temperature they reached during braking on contact with the atmosphere or how they crystallised during cooling. Does the fact that there are so many of them mean that they are therefore easy to find? It depends on the proportion of cosmic dust in the total dust in the place where we are looking for them. In places far removed from civilisation and thus all man-made dust, this will be a much easier task. This does not mean, however, that it is not possible even in the very heart of Wrocław, on the roof of the Institute of Geological Sciences, which we – the students – were able to successfully prove”.
The lecture will be in Polish and take place on 6.04.2024 at 10:00 a.m. in Room 220 at pl. M. Borna 9 and online at LINK.
