While watching the present-day protests and their demands, we can see the problems of political polarization and socio-economic inequality reflected in them. People fight to improve their financial situation, live in dignity, be equal in the eyes of law, have the right to be themselves, and be seen by others – by the power-wielding individuals and the rest of the world. On the one hand, the inequalities embedded in Polish society have a long history. On the other hand – these inequalities have different sides and depending on the socio-political moment some fade away and some become more prominent.
During the March SocioPerception, we will focus on the categories of respect, recognition, and prestige with inequalities being our starting point. Our guests, editors of Understanding Recognition. Conceptual and Empirical Studies (Routledge, London 2022), will talk about what varies and connects these categories, and how they can help understand the processes happening in present-day Polish society.
During our meeting, we will consider the following: the fight for recognition in our society and the sides partaking in it, people and reasons why they receive the biggest recognition in contrast to people who have to fight for it; Reasons for the uneven distribution of respect and the extent to which it is – historically – unmoved. Can recognition and respect be inborn or do we gain them?
