Waste or raw material? The role of the closed loop in waste management

Date:

24 February 2024, 10:00 - 12:00

Place:

Room 220 (II flloor) at the Institute of Geological Sciences of the University of Wrocław, Pl. M. Borna 9

We invite you to a lecture by dr hab. Anna Potysz, prof. UWr. “Waste or raw material? The role of the closed loop in waste management”, during which you will learn how to assess waste for its further usefulness in processing. The lecture will also be available online. LINK TO THE MEETING.

“Currently we associate waste with something unusable and useless, but in reality it can be a raw material. It is the closed-loop economy that is a strategy in which products, materials and raw materials should remain in the economy for as long as possible and waste generation should be minimised as much as possible. In a closed loop, waste is separated, processed and the raw materials it contains are recovered. But actually what method allows raw materials to be recovered from waste? One such method is the application of biohydrometallurgical techniques that use microorganisms to recover elements bound in waste. Assessing the feasibility of bio-based recovery methods begins at the laboratory experiment stage, during which understanding how a waste reacts under given experimental conditions and what its potential is in terms of raw material recovery provide key information for the further development of recovery technologies.”
