Digital Festival – transcribing Władysław Nehring’s diary

This time, the team working on the Workflow project, dedicated to digital publishing at a university, would like to invite you to the Digital Festival, where you will be able to participate in the transcription of Władysław Nehring’s diary! The event is open to everyone; the Virtual Transcription Laboratory, which you will use to provide the transcription, is a simple and intuitive tool that anyone can learn to use.

Join us on October 26 at 10 am on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/mojetranskrypcje) or on the University of Wrocław’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/uniwroc) where we will start a live broadcast and teach you how to use the Virtual Transcription Laboratory – the tool used for providing online transcriptions of digitised manuscripts and printed texts, both new and old. The tool was created at the University Library of the UWr to make using the Digital Library (www.bibliotekcyfrowa.pl) easier.

During the meeting, we will explain how the tool works using a sample of Władysław Nehring’s (1830-1909) diary – a manuscript signed as Akc. 1949/590 at the University Library of the UWr. The author was a remarkable linguist and Slavic languages researcher who worked at the University of Wrocław. He was, therefore, a 19th-century academic associated not just with Poland, but with Wrocław specifically. His impressive legacy in the form of letters and notes is a part of the library collection at the University Library of the UWr and has not been fully published yet. This created the idea to use the latest technology to promote working with manuscripts, which – due to the digitalisation process –  are becoming more easily accessible.

Next week, starting October 27, the participants will be able to provide transcriptions of given parts of the text on their own. By the end, we will have access to a version of the text that will be easy to read and search in. That, in turn, will allow us to learn more about Władysław Nehring.

If you want to participate in the transcription – apply by sending a message to transkrypcje@uwr.edu.pl.

Come join us!
