Dr Tomasz Kosmala in the prestigious magazine ACS Energy Letters

Our researchers from the Institute of Experimental Physics at the University of Wrocław are achieving another success! After publishing their research in the prestigious magazines Nature Catalysis and Joule, they have now published their research on electrocatalysts for green hydrogen production in ACS Energy Letters (IF: 23,991).

We are pleased to announce that the scientific article “Catalytic Activity of Defect-Engineered Transition Metal Dichalcogenides Mapped with Atomic-Scale Precision by Electrochemical Scanning Tunneling Microscopy” has been published in the prestigious journal ACS Energy Letters. One of the correspondence authors is dr Tomasz Kosmala of the Institute of Experimental Physics of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Wrocław, while other authors include scientists from the universities in Padua, South Florida, Aalto, and Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf.

In the published article, a team of researchers used a proprietary methodology to study electrocatalytic activity to determine the efficiency of the green hydrogen production process in the water-splitting reaction. Using electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy, 2D materials fabricated on a double layer of graphene were characterized by registering catalytic activity maps at atomic resolution. It has been shown that by producing special 1D metallic structures inserted into a 2D material, such as molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2), the high catalytic activity of a previously passive material can be achieved. The experimental results were confirmed by theoretical calculations.

The article was also recognized by the editors of the journal and the publication made it to the cover of the issue. This is not only an acknowledgment of its outstanding scientific value but also a signal that its importance to the development of knowledge about the catalytic activity of 2D materials is momentous. This publication is an important step toward a deeper understanding of the relationship between structure and catalytic activity at the atomic level, and this goal was achieved thanks to the interdisciplinary collaboration of scientists from different institutes.

The research used for the article was, among other things, co-funded by NCN under a SONATA grant (2021/43/D/ST3/02873) and an IDUB UWr project.

As a part of the open access, the full content of the article “Catalytic Activity of Defect-Engineered Transition Metal Dichalcogenides Mapped with Atomic-Scale Precision by Electrochemical Scanning Tunneling Microscopy” can be read on the website of the journal ACS Energy Letters.
