Training
Within the framework of the project we want to increase the awareness of the University staff regarding the needs of people with disabilities (Task 1). We have planned a number of training courses to raise competences.
Courses and training
Training in educational counselling for people with disabilities.
We noticed that the assessment of educational needs and opportunities is an important stage for people who have already started their studies and who encounter difficulties of a formal nature during the academic year and the examination session. We therefore plan to develop the offer of The Service Team for Students and Doctoral Students with Disabilities aimed at candidates for studies and for the Doctoral School, students and PhD candidates with disabilities. After consulting with an employee of the Team, is to receive developed individual forms of support in accordance with the applicable regulations – among others Regulations of the Studies, Regulations of non-material support for people with disabilities at the University of Wrocław, Resolutions of Faculty Councils.
Sign language courses at basic and intermediate levels.
Due to the fact that there is a group of hearing impaired students at UWr, we also decided to invest in appropriate competences of administrative staff who serve students on a daily basis. They are crucial for a proper communication process. We are committed to ensuring that staff confidently communicate with deaf people in their daily work.
Training on technologies to support the accessibility of content for people with disabilities.
Furthermore, we would like to support website developers, administrators and editors of UWr websites as well as people responsible for creating materials published on websites working at our University. We would like to broaden the knowledge of employees in the scope of principles of making teaching materials available, describing documents in an appropriate way or placing information on websites according to WCAG requirements and provisions of the act on ensuring accessibility to people with special needs and the act on digital accessibility of websites and mobile applications of public entities.
Training on safe evacuation of people with disabilities.
The training is aimed at administrative staff of the university and student residences and aims to equip staff with the necessary knowledge on how to evacuate people with various disabilities, which affects their safety on university premises.
Training in techniques and tools for teaching foreign languages to people with disabilities.
The need for such training in teaching foreign languages arose as a result of the growing number of students taking advantage of individual classes in a foreign language included in the curriculum. Teachers conducting group and individual classes for students and PhD students with disabilities will be equipped with skills of working with students with autism spectrum disorders, visual impairment, hearing impairment and motor disabilities.
Training in the principles of dealing with people in mental health crisis.
Very high interest of the teaching staff and administrative employees in such training is a result of more and more frequent occurrences of mental crises during classes or while doing some errands in the UWr units. We want to minimise the risk for the student in crisis, other students and ourselves. The training will be connected with the procedure developed within the project in the scope of dealing with a mental crisis and will be extended to such issues as ethics in contacts with people with disabilities.
Training in architectural accessibility and universal design, architectural designs and renovation plans.
The university’s premises should be friendly to all groups. Renovations and investments should be carried out in such a way as to ensure comfortable functioning for all people. The administrative staff of the university’s technical department will be familiar with the needs of those using UWr buildings with different types of disabilities, the elderly and mothers with children. Therefore, training the staff in this area is crucial so that all investments take into account the needs of people with disabilities, including complying with the principles of universal design and the requirements of the act on ensuring accessibility for people with special needs.
Training on equal opportunities policy.
Many people refer to the slogan of equal opportunities policy. But what exactly is this topic? We want to explain it to all staff at the University. This will enable staff to avoid miscommunication, stigmatisation or discrimination, and to learn how to work with people with disabilities, supporting rather than oppressing them in matters relating to the functioning of the university or everyday life.
