Mission
The University of Wrocław is a university of international influence with strong roots in the city, region and country. We conduct scientific research and educate students and PhD students in the spirit of openness, independence, honesty and tolerance, serving society and science, and aspiring to the role of one of the depositories of human intellectual achievements.
The mission of the University of Wrocław is:
- seeking truth, transmitting knowledge and nurturing culture;
- to build social and intellectual capital by shaping open-minded people, prepared to act locally and globally, able to find themselves in a changing world, accepting diversity and aware of the importance of national and regional identity;
- conducting scientific research in a free, full and open manner while maintaining the balance between basic and applied research.
Values
The University of Wrocław (Universitas Wratislaviensis) cultivates valuable elements of the rich and complex academic heritage of Wrocław, in particular the Universitas Leopoldina Wratislaviensis founded in 1702 and its institutional continuation with the Universitas Litterarum Wratislaviensis formed between 1811 and 1816. Since its foundation in 1945 – with the contribution of the pioneers of science in post-war Wrocław, including scholars from the Jan Kazimierz University in Lvov, in grateful memory – the University has served science and society.
The traditions of academic freedom and readiness to participate in the building of civil society are important to us. The best capital and the highest value of the University of Wrocław is the community of employees, students and doctoral students, which maintains a permanent bond with its graduates. The subjectivity of the university community is the basis for maintaining and shaping academic autonomy, integrity and openness through care for working and learning conditions and the highest standards of ethos of researcher, lecturer and student.
The values that make up the foundation of the University of Wrocław revolve around four assumptions:
- top quality, consisting of: world-class research; high potential of academic staff and state-of-the-art technologies; ability to define goals and long-term educational strategy; self-improvement of management procedures; internal and external evaluation as a permanent tool for shaping the university’s strategy;
- effectiveness and diversity, consisting of: interdisciplinarity; a modern doctoral school; individualisation of educational and scientific paths; all levels of education, lifelong learning; effective education and competences useful in the labour market; mobility of researchers, students and doctoral students;
- openness and readiness for challenges, consisting of: freedom of science – freedom of scholars; cooperation and dialogue with the environment; tolerance, kindness, dignity; a meeting place for different views and cultures; reaction to changes, following universal development trends;
- synergy, consisting of: knowledge and innovativeness; close connection between educational and scientific activity; educating elites and shaping educational quality standards; modern infrastructure and open resources of knowledge; implementation potential and commercialisation of scientific research results; expert role and socio-cultural impact.
