University of Wrocław high in the Nature Index

In the latest ranking of The Nature Index, the University of Wrocław was ranked 5th among Polish institutions in terms of the Share index, and 4th among Polish universities. Last year, researchers from the UWr published 58 articles in journals on the prestigious Nature Research list, with a share index of 15.17. As far as scientific disciplines are concerned, chemists lead the UWr researchers with a share index of 8.93, while physicists were the co-authors of the largest number of scientific articles last year, publishing as many as 27.

The Nature Index is a database collecting information about authors’ affiliations of scientific publications and research collaborations. The index tracks contributions to scientific publications in 82 of the most prestigious scientific journals in science and life sciences, selected by an independent group of researchers.

The ranking is compiled by Nature Research, publisher of the leading science journal Nature. It presents both the absolute number of articles published in these journals by scientists from individual countries and scientific institutions (the so-called Count), as well as an indicator regarding the percentage of co-authorship of a given publication (the so-called Share).

For each article co-authored by a researcher from a given country or institution, the country or institution receives 1 point (Count). The Share indicator is calculated so that each article receives 1 point to be shared among the co-authors. It is assumed that each researcher has contributed equally to the publication. Thus, if an article has 10 authors, each author receives 0.1 points (Share).  The results are also presented by scientific discipline, i.e. Physical Sciences, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Sciences and Life Sciences.

The latest ranking presents the affiliation results of articles published between 1 November 2020 and 31 October 2021. It shows that Polish researchers co-authored 802 scientific articles, with a Share index of 263.52. As a country, we publish the most in Physical Sciences. On the other hand, chemistry is the field where we have the highest Share index in relation to the Count index.
