University Netiquette

The rules listed below do not intend to inhibit or restrict freedom of speech. The University of Wrocław attaches great importance to the freedom of speech, but we also value mutual respect and react whenever we witness hatred towards anyone. That is why we decided to write down the rules that apply to all of us when it comes to communication regarding the social communities of the University of Wrocław.

The communication channels of the University of Wrocław, in addition to the main website www.uni.wroc.pl and the recruitment website www.rekrutacja.uni.wroc.pl, are also the official profiles of the University of Wrocław on social media: Facebook: @uniwroc, Instagram: @uniwersytet_wrocławski, Twitter: @uniwroc, Youtube: @uniwersytet_wrocławski.

They are run by the Communication Department of the University of Wrocław. It is worth to follow those channels to be up to date with the upcoming events, announcements, conferences reports, meetings, and actions organized by student organizations. What is more, you will also learn what types of changes are implemented at the university – the messages, orders, regulations appear here. In addition to the main profiles of the University in social media, it is worth to follow the Facebook channels of the units, i.e. departments, institutes, libraries (Wrocław University Library or institute libraries, such as the library of the Institute of Polish Philology), profiles of units operating at the University of Wrocław, e.g. the Confucius Institute or Willy Brandt’s Center, museums such as the Geological Museum. It is also worth being up to date with the website of the Rector of the University of Wrocław, prof. Przemysław Wiszewski www.przemyslawwiszewski.pl, and to subscribe to his account on Facebook.

Social media accounts of the University of Wrocław are our common cause. We create them together. We share content (hopefully an interesting one), you comment on posts, leave reactions, write private messages to us, share content that you like and consider valuable. Thank you very much for your commitment. It is extremely important to us.

We all work within and for the University of Wrocław. Which is: a university with a three-hundred-year-old tradition that cares for a high level of transmitted knowledge and communication standards. We want to explain to you why we at times interfere in discussions, how we verify the content, and why, in extreme cases, which fortunately so far could be counted on the fingers of one… maybe two hands, we have to delete some comments. What does our netiquette look like, because when it is being violated, we have to intervene.

Netiquette applies to everybody. Students, employees of the University of Wrocław, people that have nothing to do with the university on a daily basis. Authors of posts and their commentators.

The 12 rules of our netiquette are presented below. Underneath them, there is an explanation of how we understand and follow them.

1. Respect others and treat people the way you want them to treat you.

2. Do not hate and oppose it yourself!

3. Be emotionally intelligent and be sensitive. Remember that your freedom ends where others’ harm begins.

4. Never criticize someone for appearance, origin, religion, sexual orientation…

5. Did you break it? Repair it!

6. Type simple and no scum.

7. Accept that everyone has the right to make a mistake. If you make a mistake – take it on your chest.

8. Do not create and do not repeat fake news. Do not be surprised that we verify the content.

9. Remember about copyright.

10. Take care of your own and others’ privacy.

11. Give us a moment. We will answer.

12. Will we share? Sure! However…
