Wrocławska Wolność (Wrocław Freedom) – applications

Until Monday 31 March, the Rector’s Office of the University of Wrocław is accepting applications for the Wrocław Freedom badge of honour.

The badge of honour ‘Wrocław Freedom’ is awarded to persons who, in the period of communist dictatorship before 1989, while being members of the University of Wrocław community (employees or students) stood up for fundamental values such as freedom, truth, justice, human dignity.

The badge may also be awarded posthumously. In such a case, it is presented to the next of kin.

In the current edition, the awards will be granted on the eve of a special anniversary – this year it will be 45 years since the August strikes and the creation of the Solidarity Trade Union. This year, therefore, the Rector is encouraging applications especially from those who were active in the open and underground Solidarity. However, this does not mean that it is not possible to award the badge for other merits.

The badge of honour is awarded by the Rector of the University of Wrocław at the proposal of the Chapter.

Candidates for the decoration may be proposed by members of the Senate of the University of Wrocław, Councils of Institutes and Faculties, groups of at least five University employees and persons decorated with the badge ‘Wrocławska Wolność’, excluding members of the Chapter.

The application for the decoration should include: the name of the candidate, his/her status at the University of Wrocław, a description of the candidate’s activities, especially at the time when he/she was a member of the academic community (max. 1800 characters), contact details of at least one applicant, in the case of an application for a posthumous decoration also indicating the contact details of the next of kin representative, signatures of the applicant(s).

The application signed by the applicants should be submitted to the Rector’s Office or a scan should be sent by email to: rektor@uwr.edu.pl by Monday, 31 March.

The badge will be awarded by the Rector on 13 June.
